FEDERAL COURT

Different rules apply to federal court criminal prosecutions. For example, federal cases can start with an arrest and a criminal complaint, but then usually proceed to a grand jury indictment. During the grand jury phase of a criminal case, representation by counsel is very important. Your counsel can negotiate with the United States Attorney in charge of the case, who is the prosecutor, to avoid your appearance before a grand jury, and to arrange for evidence sought by the grand jury to be turned over in a cooperative fashion. If charges are filed by a grand jury, then your attorney can surrender you to the court for a bond hearing, and reach an agreement with the prosecutor on bond.

There are two federal courts in Michigan, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, located in Detroit, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan, located in Grand Rapids. Mr. Eaman is admitted to both courts and has represented clients in both courts.

When charges are returned by a grand jury, or charged in a complaint in federal court, it is important to hire an attorney that is experienced in federal court. Mr. Eaman has had experience in almost all types of federal criminal prosecutions. A sample of the types of cases he has represented clients in includes the following types of cases:

  • Health care fraud
  • Tax fraud
  • False federal claims
  • Criminal civil rights charges
  • RICO (Racketeering) charges
  • Drug law violations
  • Conspiracy charges
  • Trademark violations
  • Trade secret violations
  • Internet pornography cases
  • Alien smuggling
  • Bank robbery
  • Federal homicide charges

Mr. Eaman has represented clients in two of the longest trials in the Eastern District of Michigan in recent years, and three of the most famous. See his resume.
